I have received feedback on my final assignment in this section of the course and I am excited by the journey ahead. Overall I agree with the feedback from my tutor on each assignment and I believe that over the course of Context and Narrative I have further developed my photographic skills and knowledge. After completion of Assignment 2 and continued with research into such photographers as Diane Arbus and Francesca Woodman I began to question some of the artistic content in my work. I decided that I want to explore ideas that were completely new to me, fuelled by new interests, personal feelings and a determination to take myself out of my comfort zone when in front and behind the camera. With the odd misjudgement or mistake along the way, (which I might add are as vitally important as the successes) I am happy that I have done this.
Learning outcomes
- Create images that demonstrate a practical and conceptual understanding of techniques, and the importance of context in creating meaning and narrative.
I have continued to address varying topics within the course of my assignments and can see genuine progress with my practical techniques and also how the use differing techniques affect my work. In this particular assignment I feel that both sets of images had the foundation of a narrative that was contextualised by my research, planning and execution.
- Demonstrate an emerging critical awareness and an ability to articulate ideas into imagery through appropriate use of technique.
The underlying theme I wanted to portray within my sets of photographs was one that questions the nature of personal identity. I also wanted to use this opportunity to explore how the camera allows photographers to undertake new identities and also create staged imagery. This is clearly evidenced by my exercise work leading up to the assignments and also further research in the critical process of critiquing and analysing photography by a varied set of practitioners. I believe that my research and contextualisation of the work of such practioners as Diane Arbus, Daido Moriyama and Francesca Woodman in particular have greatly fuelled my continued search to find my individual voice.
- Conduct research, development and production of photographic work in response to the themes explored in this unit and show a developing understanding of contemporary imagery in relation to historical practice and theory.
My research throughout the course has been full and varied, yet as my tutor has mentioned not always clearly documented. I have used the course framework to research both historical practice and contemporary imagery, not only within photography but also the wider medium of art. Again some of my extended research has not been clearly evidenced and this is an area I will continue to work on. I also have also not used citations to best effort when contextualising my work and this is also something I will continue to work on when critiquing my own work and that of others.
- Show an ability to critique your own imagery and reflect upon your learning experience, and developing sophistication of your assessment of the work of other practitioners.
I have continued to explore the nature of assessing my work and that of others by the means of my personal sketchbook which I have photographed and posted onto various sections of my blog. Throughout the lead up to an assignment I have undertaken other personal projects which have been influenced by my assessment and research of other photographers which has in turn fed into my final assignment work. I have also used these projects to further analyse my own work and how I have come to my artistic decisions. I also feel that how I write contextually on my work and others has continued to develop, but ultimately is a work in progress.
